Arts on the Horizon's

Commitment to Change

We believe that a systemic change needs to be made to address racism, police brutality, injustice, inequality, and all other agents of white supremacy. Black Lives Matter. We understand that we have a unique responsibility because we educate and influence the minds of young children. To that end, we commit to taking the following initial steps to implement change within Arts on the Horizon.

Invest

Evaluate

Invest in and champion more Black artists, Indigenous artists, and artists of color (BIPOC artists), as well as LGBTQ+ artists both onstage and off, specifically in actor, creator, playwright, designer, stage manager, and director roles.
Evaluate our artistic process and production development process in order to ensure a safe space where everyone’s voice can be heard and valued.

Require

Increase

Require and provide recurring anti-racism education, training, and resources for board, company members, and staff.
Increase the number of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ voices represented on our board, within our company members, and throughout our staff.

Strengthen

Create

Strengthen our focus on educating young children about the importance of empathy, kindness, and understanding a variety of cultures and backgrounds.
Create an ongoing list of books for ages 0-6 on our website, written by authors of color and featuring stories about children of color, in an effort to diversify the resources available to our families and our teachers.

Provide

Regularly provide anti-racism resources and tools (including but not limited to videos, articles, and books) via our website and newsletter for parents and families of children ages 0-6.

Guarantee

Guarantee a safe workplace and a community gathering space with a zero-tolerance policy on discrimination and harassment.
Hold leadership accountable for these and all future actions through our
Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion committee.
We commit to making these ongoing, sustainable, and lasting changes, while acknowledging that these changes take time.
Though these initial steps are in reaction to current events, they are necessary to create a better, more open,
and inclusive environment at Arts on the Horizon.
We understand this is a living document, which will be updated as we continue to listen, learn, and grow.
